That gives the wardrobe a genuine tension. The fairytale signal has to survive being modernised, which means keeping one strong element, a colour, a motif, a silhouette, and letting everything else be contemporary. Drop the signal entirely and the character disappears. Keep all of it and she is in costume.
It is a good exercise in how much of a design you can strip before it stops being recognisable, and the answer is usually less than you think.
