Pageant clothes have an unusual brief: they have to work in three different views on the same night.

From the back of a hall, only the silhouette and colour are visible. From the front row, the fabric and the fit are being judged. On camera, it is the face and the neckline and nothing else. An outfit that only wins one of those three is a weak entry, and building something that survives all three is the actual challenge here.

That is more interesting than picking the prettiest gown. Start from the silhouette, because it is the only one of the three you cannot fix later.
