A picnic is a small composition, and small compositions are unforgiving because there is nowhere to hide a bad decision.

The blanket is the background and sets the palette for everything on it. The food is the colour. The arrangement is the whole design, and there are only so many objects, which means each one has to be placed rather than dropped. Scatter everything evenly and it reads as clutter; group things and leave space and it reads as a photograph.
