The elf uniform is a real costume tradition with rules: green and red, pointed shapes, bells, stripes, and a silhouette that has barely changed in a century.

Which makes it good material, because a uniform with rules is more interesting to style than a blank wardrobe. The room is in what you do inside the code, how far you push the stripe, whether the pointed shoe stays, what happens if the palette shifts one step. You can dress a human here too, and that comparison shows how much of an elf is clothing rather than ears.
