Almost anything works on denim. Patches, embroidery, paint, studs, bleach, raw edges, and it still reads as a pair of shorts rather than as a costume, because the base is so familiar. That means the design stage here has a much higher ceiling than it would on any other garment, and the only real risk is stopping too early.

The outfit stage afterwards has the opposite problem. Once the shorts are loud, the top has to be quiet, and that is where the decisions get harder.
