Fae in the older stories are not sweet. They are dangerous, ancient and not particularly interested in people, and the design should say so.
That means moving away from everything the modern fairy look is built on. No pastel, no gauze, no butterfly wings. Instead: bark, antler, bone, deep saturated colour, ornament that looks grown rather than made, and a silhouette that is slightly wrong in a way you cannot immediately name. Get that last part right and the character stops being a costume.
