Tartan is a grid, and a grid will fight anything else with a repeat in it.

Merida fronts this one, which makes sense given where the cloth comes from, and the game is built around pairing a single patterned piece with plain ones. There is a real skill in it: choose the check first, find one of its minor colours, usually the thin overcheck line rather than the dominant ground, and dress the rest of the look in that shade.
