Everything has to work at a size you can cover with a fingertip. That means a busy design reads as texture rather than as detail, and a single strong idea beats five clever ones every time. Metal, stone, setting, and maybe one thing that is unusual. Past that it stops being legible.
The fantasy half is where the freedom is. Stones that could not exist, settings that are clearly not jewellery-shop work, and shapes borrowed from something that is not a ring at all.
