A group shirt is a harder design problem than a personal one, because it has to work on everybody.
That rules out anything too specific, anything that only works in one colour, and anything so clever it will be tired by the second week. What survives is a simple mark, one or two colours, and placement that works whether the shirt is worn loose or fitted. Most good group shirts are much plainer than the first draft anybody produces.
The design stage here gives you enough rope to overdo it, which is the fastest way to understand why the plain versions win.
